PERSONALITY ASSESSMENT: PRISMATIC APPROACH AT SSB

Leadership Qualities(OLQs) of a candidate are assessed using three various proven techniques at SSB viz; Psychometric tests,Interview and Group Testing Techniques. The personality traits of the candidates are assessed by 3 experts(Psychologist, Interviewing Officer and GroupTesting Officer)using these three techniques independently

On the culmination of these exercises, the pen pictures thus evolved,of each candidate are assimilated and compared to arrive at a consensus decision to clear/drop the candidate.Hence the process is more or less fool- proof, transparent and unbiased.

There is an interesting legend behind this comprehensive selection process, which make all Indians swell with pride. The source concept of SSB selection( recognized world over) dates back to our Great Epic 'Maha Bharata',precisely to Yudh Kand and to 'Sree Bhagawat Geeta', pearls of wisdom given to man kind, by Sree Krishna.

While motivating Arjun to take Ghandeev, his great bow and fight again, Krishna says its a Dharma Yudh, victory of goodness over evil.At one point Arjun asks" Hey Krishna, how do I recognize human nature and character?Man pretends to be nice always but many are actually not".Krishna gives this great wisdom."You focus on a man's 3 factors-Manasa(Mind),Vacha(Speech), and Karmna(Actions).

Thus the first seeds of Personality assessment was sawn, later developed by Western World to the presently practiced techniques.

I leave the logic of three dimensional assessment to the imagination of my dear readers.

Jai Hind.

THE ULTIMATE PEOPLES SKILL

"The ARC Triangle is the keystone of living associations."

Affinity: how well you like or love a person
Reality: how much agreement you have with a person; what you agree to be real
Communication: your exchange of information and ideas
Understanding: The result of combining affinity, reality and communication

ARC at Work
Your job is good or bad depending on the level of ARC at your work place. When the workers and management have a high level of ARC for each other, the job is a joy. The group feels like a team, accomplishes a great deal and expands. Yet when the people in a group dislike each other, disagree with each other or do not communicate well, you have high stress, low productivity and poor morale.

If you like your job, you have good ARC with at least some of the people there. You talk about the work all day which means you have good communication, you more or less agree on work issues which means you have a shared reality about the work, and you feel friendly toward these people meaning (affinity).

On the other hand, you might have weak ARC with a few of these people if you rarely talk, disagree on certain things and do not particularly like each other. You might even have an enemy at work: you automatically disagree with the person, refuse to talk to the person and feel hatred toward the person.

If your ARC is low with too many people, you will not enjoy working there. Fortunately, you can increase your ARC for any group of which you are part.

"If one really communicates and communicates well to these people -- listens to what they have to say and acknowledges what they say and says what he has to say to them, gently enough and often enough that it is actually received by them -- he will regain, to a very marked degree, his ability to associate and coordinate the actions of those people with whom he is immediately surrounded.

"Here we have ARC immediately adjusted to work."

Five simple steps:

1. Listen to the people at your work
2. Acknowledge what you hear
3. Say what you have to say
4. Be gentle about it
5. Persist

For example, if you show up, ignore everyone and just work, you will have problems. You will not understand what your coworkers or bosses are doing. You will not be given new responsibilities nor more pay. You will feel alone and unhappy.

Yet if you listen, acknowledge, talk, be gentle and persist, your ARC will then begin to rise. You will see people agreeing with you and you will find yourself agreeing with them. You will feel good about what you are doing as you have more affinity for the people and the work.

For example, Stan has been a loner since he started his new job last month. During the lunch break, he eats alone while the other workers talk about the job and share jokes. After a while, no one notices him. He doesn't like being ignored, but is too shy to break the ice. He hates his job.

After learning about ARC, he decides to give it a try. He simply stands near a group, listens to someone talk about their weekend of camping and says, "That sounds like fun." Later that day, he hears someone explain how they do a task and he says, "Interesting. I think I'll try that."

Each day, he listens and acknowledges more conversations. He starts saying a few things of his own. Because he raises the C corner of the triangle, the other two points rise as well (covered in Part 1 and Part 2 on this subject). His ARC with the group rises each day. Soon, he feels part of the group.

When you have ARC at work, you feel more cheerful, think better and make better decisions. You enjoy your work, have pride in your accomplishments and make a difference in the success of the company. You rise to the top!

Recommendations

1. Listen to twice as many people at work this week.

2. Acknowledge what everyone has to say. Make sure they know you heard them. Ignore no one.

3. Say what you have to say more often to more people.

4. Be gentle in your communications. Avoid being forceful, demanding or angry.

5. Persist with the above four steps until you feel you are part of a great team, coordinate more smoothly with others and have more enjoyment.

Coax yourself to join the best SSB coaching institute

You have  decided to become an army officer and protect  our mother land, but, at the same time, you are also positively aware of the heavy competition that comes with it. The National Defence Academy (NDA),Officers Training Academy,(OTA),Indian Military Academy(IMA)and various other Armed Forces Academies conduct twice  a year  interviews select  the Gentlemen  cadets and Lady cadets to these elite Institutions. Many of the candidates  are stuck with the erroneous notion that these tests are just based on the physical fitness of the candidate. Along the course, we neglect other important aspects of the test/interviews, which are  mental agility, intelligence and personality of the candidates. A leader is someone who should be ready to saddle multifarious roles and responsibilities with ease during the toughest of times. They should in no way succumb to fear from the dangers exuded by external sources. Subsequently, they should also learn to successfully command their juniors. All this requires unwavering grit that only a true leader can accomplish. The armed forces are not for the faint hearted. Hence the assessment of candidates are done purely on their Leadership Qualities.(OLQs)

Role of  Olive Greens as a Leadership  institute
Services Selection Board (SSB) thus forms an integral element of the selection process. It is a personality and intelligent assessment test that is spontaneous in nature. Comprising of a sequence of psychological tests like situational and stress management tests, the interview process is intensively conducted over a span of five days.  If you are a stranger to this, then worry not!, you too can crack this daunting SSB with the right amount of training and exposure.

An  Institute should bestow a conducive and stimulating environment to its students. It is thus better if it is situated around lush greenery. Subsequently, it should not only be theoretical in nature, but also offer hands-on training to its students. To meet the rigors of the interview , the program should be designed in such a way that the training is realistic and demanding in nature. The faculty should consist of trainers who are experienced and have served in many SSB boards. They should be able to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the students and give honest feedback. Reasonably priced boarding and lodging services are additional bonuses that should be thought-out. Last but not the least, the Institute should believe in action rather than in words. It ought to flaunt an admirable success rate.

So what are you waiting for? Enrol yourself in the best SSB coaching programme, Olive Greens Institute and bring laurels to our country.

Basic Tips for Candidates Planning to Commence Preparation for SSB

Start your SSB preparation by first understanding what is the rationale of SSB process. We all know that assessors at the SSB are trying to check certain basic traits of our personality that should essentially be present in a leader, these qualities are called OLQs. Some of these qualities can be acquired through practice and grooming, while others are hard wired into our DNA and may require  serious effort and mammoth resolve to acquire.

All the three assessors apply their technique to discern the same OLQs and have one third contribution towards your selection or otherwise. Therefore, it is a misnomer that your Psych went bad and GTO went well, as the qualities revealed by you with one assessor would have been similarly revealed with the other assessor also.

All test/ tasks conducted by the assessors are done against the constraint of time and stress and hence, it is not possible to hide your true self. Hence the best option is to be honest and not hide your characteristics as it will generate stress in your mind and your performance will get effected.

If that be the case, it is best to understand who you really are and see what the SSB is looking for, and then work on the gap that you have noticed between the two.

That is where a good mentor will assist you, so that you do not give coached responses but display your true self in the most acceptable way.

Those who are commencing their preparation must majorly focus on improving their general awareness. In case you are well informed, your story's of TAT will be most mature and informative, your WAT will reflect meaningful sentences, your SRTs will be showing balanced judgement and will be more practical, you will be able to participate better in GTO tasks like GD, Lecturettes, GPE, etc, also you will be able to handle the personal interview better with olivegreens.in

Second area of improvement is your communication skills, for which every day prepare atleast two current topics and stand in front of a mirror and give a talk to yourself in your own words for 15-20 mins daily. In case you can form a group of even 4-5 students your could do some GDs also.

Third area that you need to look at is your personal grooming like turnout, bearing, social graces, etc. You need to go for a jog daily, start shaving, have proper haircut, wear formal clothes, be gentlemanly in your conduct and behaviour towards others.

Once you feel confident with the above, it may be prudent to join a good personality development cum leadership programme from a reputed institute to do the fine finish.
Al the best!!
